Flutes Galore is for people who have some level of competency as flute players. It is not necessary to have any formal qualifications e.g. flute exams. The current fifteen members as of February 2025 are flute enthusiasts who love to share the music-making experience.
Flutes Galore began in January 2018 with four players and rapidly grew as flautists from Barnsley and surrounding towns got to hear about us.
In 2022, Nicola McDonnell joined us and raised the quality of playing of the group. She is an outstanding flautist and music teacher who plays in the Yorkshire Wind Orchestra. Just about all the members of Flutes Galore have private lessons with her! She is Music Director of the Barnsley Flute Choir and all members of Flutes Galore play in this 28-strong band.
Throughout the year, Flutes Galore give concerts in care homes and for a wide range of community groups. In 2023 we represented Barnsley u3a in the Yorkshire and Humberside u3a Music Festival at St John's College, York, and in 2024 repeated the exercise at the first ever National u3a Festival at York University.
Every December, under the name of Barnsley Flute Choir, we play carols in supermarkets, shopping centres and many other venues to raise funds for local charities.
