We have a varied programme of talks, practical classes, and field trips. If you have thought in the past you’d like to know more about geology, this is an opportunity to find out. Our indoor activities are as far as possible held on the fourth Friday of the month at Monk Bretton Methodist Church. As you can see from the programme linked below, we have a very varied programme. You don’t need any prior geological knowledge, just an interest in learning more through talks, hand on practical’s and field trips.
Some pictures of the group on a recent field trip to Winscar Reservoir and Lowe Edge. Under the guidance of group member Rick, we studied the relationships between the c 320 million year old rocks in the area. We found the evidence necessary to determine the ancient environment in which they were deposited and the direction of flow of the rivers which deposited them.
Some pictures of the group on a recent field trip to Barnburgh Cliff . We inspected the Carboniferous rocks of Westphalian age and the overlying Permian rocks, the Cadeby Formation. There is a 60 million year gap between these two successions and we discussed how this gap occurred and how to tell the environments in which these rocks were deposited.
